Multiple sclerosis. Light micrograph of a section through human spinal cord nerve tissue affected by multiple sclerosis (MS). Nerve fibres are seen running from left to right. The tissue is spongy throughout the image. Spaces are apparent between nerve fibres due to the loss of the myelin sheaths. This sheath covers and protects nerve fibres, insulating and providing nutrients to the cells that carry nerve impulses. During MS,parts of the nervous system undergo rapid loss of myelin. This can lead to symptoms such as unsteady gait, defects in vision and speech, and paralysis. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size | |
