Systemic lupus erythematosus. Light micrograph of a section through a glomerulus (blood filtration structure) from kidney tissue in a case of SLE. This is an autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system attacks its own organs. Genetic and environmental factors are thought to contribute to its cause. It is often diagnosed when following up a neurological disorder that may be a complication of SLE. Treatment is with immunosuppressant and corticosteroid drugs. A special diet may be needed when the kidneys are affected by this condition. Kidney failure will require dialysis and a kidney transplant. Magnification unknown | |
