Cutaneous larva migrans. Linear red rashes around a patient's knee caused by burrowing larvae of the dog hookworm (Ancylostoma braziliensis). This tropical parasite normally infects dogs, but the larvae can survive for several months in humans, where they burrow around under the skin. The eggs hatch in dog faeces and release larvae into the soil. The larvae can penetrate unbroken skin when any part of the body comes in contact with the ground. As they migrate under the skin they cause a severe localized allergic reaction known as creeping eruption. The infection can be destroyed by anthelmintic drugs | |
