Pyelonephritis. Illustration showing reflux (backflow) of urine, coloured yellow, from the bladder into the ureters, causing pyelonephritis (inflammation of the kidney). The bladder is at lower centre, kidneys are at top left & right and the skeleton is coloured blue. Reflux is often caused by a malfunctioning valve where the ureter opens into the bladder. Persistent reflux of urine causes repeated kidney infection by bacteria. Pus (yellow streaks & nodules) builds up in the kidneys. Symptoms of acute pyelonephritis include back pain, fever & weight loss; in chronic disease the kidneys become small & scarred,& kidney failure may develop. Treatment is with antibiotics | |
