MODEL RELEASED. Impetigo: bacterial skin infection affecting an infant's chin. These sores are caused by streptococcus bacteria (although staphylo- cocccus is often responsible). Impetigo is common in young children where it affects the face and limbs, and is highly contagious. It occurs when bacteria enter the skin through a broken area. Infection spreads quickly, starting as a red patch and developing into fluid-filled pustules that join, forming crusty yellow sores. Impetigo spreads by direct contact when the spot is rubbed, and via hand and face towels. Small epidemics occasionally occur in schools. Treatment is by the local application of antibiotics | |
