Atheroma of vessels of the lung,gross specimen. Atheroma is the deposit,or degenerative accumulation,of lipid-containing plaques on the innermost layer of the wall of an artery. Here it is the walls of the pulmonary artery that have thickened,impairing the flow of blood from the heart to the lungs. This affects the reoxygenation of the blood and leads to fatigue,shortness of breath and eventually chronic severe respiratory distress and heart failure
