Femoral artery bypass,coloured angiogram X-ray. The femoral artery (dark,top right to bottom centre) is the main artery supplying the leg. If the artery becomes blocked or narrowed,the lower leg receives less oxygenated blood than it needs. This can cause symptoms ranging from leg pain on exertion (claudication) to tissue death in the area. If the artery is blocked,blood flow can be restored by grafting a section of another blood vessel onto the artery,providing another route for blood flow. This is seen at centre. Angiography uses an injected contrast medium to highlight blood vessels on an X-ray
