Portal vein thrombosis. Sequence of coloured frontal (coronal) angio computed tomography (CT) scans of the abdomen of a 25-year-old patient showing thrombosis of the hepatic portal vein (arrowed). The scans are parallel slices from the middle (top left) to the front of the abdomen (bottom right). The hepatic portal vein (orange) supplies the liver (green) with blood. A blood clot (thrombus) has caused the vein to enlarge (cavernous transformation) to allow blood flow around the clot. Portal vein thrombosis is usually treated with surgery to reduce the pressure in the vein. This may involve using a shunt to partially bypass the liver
