Inflamed vein. Light micrograph of a section through a vein affected by thrombophlebitis. The wall of the vein is seen across top, with a large clot taking up much of the frame below it. Thrombophlebitis is inflammation of a vein with clot formation at the same location. It can occur after an injury to a vein,as a complication of varicose veins or as a side effect of a number of blood vessel disorders. Symptoms include a fever and pain in the affected area. If part of the clot detaches,it may travel elsewhere in the body and block another blood vessel, which can be fatal. Treatment is with anti-inflammatory drugs and supportive bandages.
