Blood flow in an adjacent artery (orange) is slowed due to the clot. DVT can cause pain and swelling in the affected area. In extreme cases a clot can break away and be carried to the lungs. This can block an artery and cause a potentially fatal pulmonary embolism. DVT has been associated with long haul flights,in which the traveller sits still in cramped conditions for long periods of time. This is commonly called economy class syndrome
