Superficial thrombophlebitis in the leg of a 60- year-old woman. Thrombophlebitis is inflammation of part of a vein, usually near the surface of the body, along with clot formation in the affected segment. The vein becomes swollen, red and extremely tender when touched. Fever may occur but dangerous complications are rare. The condition can occur after injury or as a complication of vascular disorders like varicose veins. It is common in intravenous drug abusers. Treatment includes anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics,if infection is present | |
