Atheroma plaque. Light micrograph of a section through an atheroma plaque (upper frame) inside an artery. Atheroma is a fatty substance deposited on the inner walls of arteries, usually in people with a high blood cholesterol level. The plaque of atheroma can narrow the artery significantly, raising blood pressure and leading to conditions such as angina pectoris (severe chest pain) and heart attack. The formation of plaques and narrowing of arteries is known as atherosclerosis. The condition is common in the western world, and is one of the leading causes of death. Magnification unknown | |
