Fatty disease of heart. Light micrograph of human cardiac muscle affected by fatty disease, seen in longitudinal section. Here, massive fat inclusions (black) are visible; bands of heart muscle fibres are at lower right (pink). The fat consists of an accumulation of lipid-containing vacuoles in the connective tissue between heart muscle. Fatty disease results from a failure in fatty acid metabolism; it causes lipids to accumulate inside susceptible tissues. In the heart, fatty disease may be related to atherosclerosis (development of fatty plaques in the arteries),which itself may seriously impair heart muscle function.
