| Myocardial fibrosis. Light micrograph of a section of a human heart showing myocardial fibrosis,the thickening and scarring of heart connective tissue. A thick band of connective tissue is seen at centre (pink),which has formed between bands of cardiac muscle (brown). Myocardial fibrosis is caused by inflammation of the heart,infection (viral),or from a lack of oxygen due to inadequate blood flow as happens in myocardial infarction (heart attack).
