Colour echocardiogram (colour flow doppler map) of the human heart showing mitral regurgitation, represented by the blue jet below the upper, denser blue area - the left ventricle. Colour flow mapping is a complex variation of ultrasound cardiography that is used to display the flow of blood through the heart. Mitral regurgitation is a reflux (a reverse flow) of blood from the left ventricle into the left atrium that results from the failure of the mitral valve (which divides the 2 chambers) to close. The condition may be congenital or arise from previous acute rheumatic fever; a severley damaged valve may need replacing with an artificial one (a mitral prosthesis) | |
