X-ray showing pulmonary hypertension,a condition in which there is raised blood pressure in the pulmonary artery supplying the lungs. Pulmonary blood pressure is normally lower than in the aorta. Causes include pulmonary embolism, heart failure & defects of the mitral valve (which regulates blood flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle of the heart),& chronic lung disease. Primary pulmonary hypertension develops without a known cause but is rare. Treatment involves dealing with the cause; drugs used to treat other forms of hypertension (eg propanolol) are ineffective in this instance | |
