Lung tissue hyperplasia. Light micrograph of a section through lung tissue showing mesothelial hyperplasia in the pleura,the membrane that lines the lungs and inner chest wall. Hyperplasia is the abnormal growth of a tissue or organ due to an increase in the number of cells it contains. The mesothelium is a layer of cells in the pleura. This condition is benign (non-cancerous),but may be mistaken for the cancerous mesothelioma (a cancer of the mesothelial cells) in a biopsy. Magnification unknown
