Enlarged thyroid. Coloured gamma scan of an enlar- ged thyroid gland which is suffering from over- proliferation of normal cells (hyperplasia). The thyroid is an endocrine gland at the base of the neck, and is divided into 2 lobes (as seen here). A radioactive tracer, such as iodine-131,high- lights active areas in the gland. This image is colour-coded from white (high activity),through red, yellow and green to blue (low activity). The thyroid produces and stores hormones that control the body's metabolic rate, influence growth, and regulate blood calcium levels. A gamma scan is made by a gamma camera which detects radioactivity from a tracer injected into the body | |
