Hirsutism. Hirsutism (excessive hairiness) on the face of a 24-year-old woman. Hirsutism occurs in certain conditions such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia in which the level of male hormones in the blood is abnormally high. It can also be caused by taking anabolic steroids. In many cases, however, the cause is unknown. It occurs in many normal women, particularly women with dark hair, and is common after the menopause. In this case the hirsutism is caused by a hormone imbalance as a result of polycystic ovary (Stein-Leventhal) syndrome. This condition has also caused the acneiform rash (red spots) on the woman's chin | |
