Ruptured haemorrhoids. Ruptured thrombosed external haemorrhoids (piles) seen protruding from the anus of a 38 year-old male patient. Pink lumps are seen which are swollen veins in the anal lining; a blood clot from a spontaneous rupture is also seen. Piles occurring higher in the anal canal are known as internal haemorrhoids. Piles are common,particularly during pregnancy due to the pressure of the foetus on the veins in the anus. Some people have a congenital weakness of these veins. Mild cases are controlled by drinking plenty of fluids and a high-fibre diet and by establishing regular toilet habits. More severe cases are removed surgically
