Herpes simplex lesion or cold sore on a man's lip. This is a common and troublesome infection characterised by the appearance of small fluid- filled blisters. It is contagious & usually spread by direct contact with the blisters or the fluid they contain. The virus exists in two forms known as HSV1 and HSV2. HSV1 is usually associated with infections of the lips, mouth & face,HSV2 with infections of the genitals. HSV-1 infection commonly occurs in childhood; following the primary infection, the virus persists in a latent state,re-appearing to cause recurrent cold sores.
