Gangrene in a patient's legs due to peripheral vascular disease. Gangrene is tissue death caused by poor blood flow. The dead tissue is black here. Rows of infected ulcers are seen on the patient's legs, following the course of peripheral veins. Infections are common in dead tissue, especially in patients with weakened immune systems (for instance those with AIDS). Antibiotic drugs can be taken to help prevent infection, but if the area becomes infected, the entire affected limb is usually amputated | |
