Young man suffering from gynaecomastia, the abnormal enlargement of one or both breasts. This image shows both breasts in frontal view. The condition is caused by an excess of the female sex hormone oestrogen in the blood. It is normal for men to produce small amounts of oestrogen, just as women produce comparable quantities of all the male sex hormones. Excessive production of oestrogens may be due to a number of factors: disease, such as cirrhosis & testicular cancer in adults; in children at puberty, and by drugs, such as cimetidine, digoxin & spironolactone. Treatment is directed towards the underlying cause | |
