False-colour X-ray of the left hand of a patient suffering from gouty arthritis, showing a swollen joint in the ring finger (coloured gold). Gout is a disease in which a defect in uric acid metabolism causes an excess of the acid & its salts (sodium urate) to accumulate in the bloodstream and the joints. These collect in the joint capsules causing an acute inflammation, with accompanying swelling, redness & pain. Gout has traditionally been associated with "excessive living",in particular overeating & overdrinking. Treatment involves the use of anti-inflammatory drugs & abstention from rich foods & excessive alcohol. Right-side image from pair comprising B/W original | |
