Fibrosis of the lung, gross specimen. Here the surface view shows a cobblestone appearance. When it is cut it exhibits a honeycomb lung,a long-term consequence of fibrosis. This is where areas of lung tissue are converted into macroscopic cystic (pus-filled) air spaces. Pneumonia, inhalation of toxins, some drugs and some rheumatoid diseases have all been indicated as likely causes of lung fibrosis, though the exact cause remains unknown. Respiration is impaired and in severe cases pulmonary hypertension contributes to heart failure | |
