Elephantiasis. Pregnant woman with one of her breasts enlarged due to elephantiasis (lymphatic filariasis). Elephantiasis is a type of filariasis,a disease caused by parasitic worms spread by blood-sucking insects. The worms block the lymphatic system causing fluid accumulation (oedema) and associated swelling of the lymph vessels. Repeated infections result in massive enlargement of the affected part of the body. Other commonly affected areas are the limbs or scrotum. The disease is treated with drugs.
