Ear infection. Close-up of an ear with otitis externa in an adult male. Otitis externa is an ear infection causing inflammation of the outer-ear canal. The infection has caused redness and swelling of the ear with an area of eczema (red, scaly) around its opening. Symptoms include pain and itchiness. A discharge usually also occurs from the ear (not seen). Treatment often only involves thorough cleaning and drying of the ear by a doctor. In other cases local treatment with antibacterial or antifungal preparations may be necessary depending on the cause. It is important that sufferers avoid getting the ear wet until the infection has cleared up | |
