Otitis media. Illustration of a section through the human head showing the middle ear with otitis media, including sinusitis. The cochlear of the middle ear is at centre right (purple). It is here behind the eardrum that a middle ear infection (otitis media) has occurred, with inflammation and pus discharge (yellow). Earache, fever & tinnitis (a ringing) may result. This is usually due to a bacterial infection spreading up the eustachian tube (lower centre) from infection in the upper respiratory tract. The nose is infected with pus,as are bone sinuses (sinusitis) above the nasal cavity. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs; the pus may need to be surgically drained | |
