MODEL RELEASED. Keratoconus. Close-up of the eye of a 29-year-old man with keratoconus. Keratoconus is an inherited condition, where abnormal corneal growth causes the central area of the cornea to become gradually thinned and conical (cone shaped, centre). This condition usually affects both eyes. It normally starts around puberty, causing increasing myopia (short-sightedness) and a progressive distortion of vision that cannot be corrected by glasses. Hard contact lenses help to improve vision. As the disease progresses, vision deteriorates and contact lenses are no longer effective. At this stage a corneal graft is usually performed, which normally gives excellent results | |
