Viral conjunctivitis. Close-up of a bloodshot eye with viral conjunctivitis. The white of the eye (sclera) is packed with tiny red blood vessels. Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the membrane that lines the inside of the eyelids and covers the eye. Symptoms include redness, irritation, itching, and (occasionally) abnormal sensitivity to light. Viral conjunctivitis sometimes occurs in epidemics, spreading rapidly through communities. It can also be triggered by a cold, sore throat or other viral illness (such as measles). There is no specific cure for viral conjunctivitis, but the condition usually disappears without treatment | |
