Hole in retina. Ophthalmoscope view of a retina following laser surgery to secure tissue around a hole. The dark,faint circle in the centre is the hole in the retina. The ring of white spots around it are argon laser burns,made to fix the retina to the underlying choroid tissue. A tear or hole in the retina is usually caused by gradual degen- eration or injury. Leakage of fluid through the hole can pull the retina away from the underlying tissue,leading to a detached retina and consequent loss of vision. If treated early,a de- tached retina can be fixed back in place by laser heat-treatment,completely restoring vision
