Coloboma. Close up of eye showing an enlarged pupil which extends to the lower edge of the cornea. The iris is crescent shaped and incomplete. The general appearance of the eye is otherwise normal. This very rare defect is known as a coloboma and is most commonly present from birth. There is a failure of the rudimentary eye to join at the optic fissure around the seventh week of embryonic development. This results in a visible defect in the iris and choroid (congenital coloboma). Not all deficiencies of the iris and choroid are formed in this way and may occur at a later stage | |
