Cataract. Close-up of an eye of an elderly person affected by a cataract, the loss of transparency of the crystalline lens of the eye. It is visible as a dense opacity on the pupil, the round, dark area at centre. Cataract never causes complete blindness but with the increasing loss of transparency the clarity and detail of the image is progressively lost. Most cataracts occur in elderly people and the opacification tends to progress with age. Surgery is performed to restore a clear sight; the affected lens is removed and replaced with an artificial implant. Cataract surgery gives excellent results in most cases, provided the eye is otherwise healthy | |
