Erythema multiforme. View of an acute skin rash covering the back of a male patient,in the condition of erythema multiforme. This name means "skin redness of many varieties". It is a disorder characterised by skin inflammation,often with itchy symmetrical spots which may progress to raised,pale-centred weals. Sometimes the internal mucous membranes are affected,accompanied by a generalized illness. Erythema multiforme may arise in reaction to some drugs (particularly sulphona- mides),or accompany bacterial & viral infections. Some cases occur for no obvious reason. Treatment involves addressing any known cause,and use of sedative drugs. It usually clears in 5-6 weeks | |
