Down's Syndrome hand. Palm of the hand of a Down's syndrome infant, showing abnormal skin creases. Down's syndrome is due to a chromosome defect, trisomy 21 - the presence of three number 21 chromosomes instead of the normal two. The main physical features are slanted eyes,a flat nose on a round head and abnormalities of the palms of hands & soles of feet. Mental attainment is usually restricted to that of a five year old child - that is,with an I.Q. of between 50-60.
