MODEL RELEASED. Facial stroke paralysis. Face of a 58-year-old man who has had a stroke. This is damage to the brain,often caused by interruption of the blood flow to the affected area,that leads to paralysis and reduced brain functions. Here,it has caused paralysis of the right-hand side of his face (at left),as seen by the partial smile causing muscle movements only on the left-hand side of the face (at right). Stroke rehabilitation is often effective,with undamaged brain areas taking over the functions of the damaged areas. Even when this does not occur,physiotherapy and intensive training can improve the patient's muscular functioning and quality of life
