Pineal gland tumour. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a sagittal (side) section through the brain of a 40 year old woman,showing a tumour of the pineal gland (turquoise). The tumour is located at the back of the upper brainstem (mid brain) and is compressing the flow of cerebrospinal fluid,causing the enlargement of the lateral and third ventricles (pale lilac). The pineal gland is a small organ that secretes the hormone melatonin over a 24 hour cycle. Tumours of the pineal gland are rare and may be malignant (cancerous)
