Secondary (metastatic) bone cancer: false-colour gamma camera scan, showing increased uptake of radioactivity in the thoracic & lumbar spine and in the right scapula. The increased activity ("hot spots") appears as the yellow & red areas down the spine and at the bottom of the shoulder blade. This is consistent with the sites of bone metastases, given that this particular patient had already received treatment for a primary cancer. This diagnosis would be confirmed by X-ray examination. The radioactive tracer used here was technetium-99m linked to methylene diphosphate (MDP) | |
