MODEL RELEASED. Cancer research. Male researcher pipetting multiple copies of the p53 gene from a cancer into an automated sequence analyser. This gene is associated with suppressing cancer cell growth. It is often mutated in human cancers, and cancers in people lacking a healthy copy may be resistant to some chemotherapy (anticancer) drugs. Knowing the form of a cancer patient's gene, the effectiveness of various chemotherapy drugs can be measured. This automated capillary electrophoresis and laser fluorescence detection system will sequence the p53 gene and display its genetic code on a computer monitor.
