Cancer researcher loads electrophoresis gel. A scientist pipettes DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) into an electrophoresis gel in a cancer research laboratory. Gel electrophoresis uses an electric current to separate a mixture of DNA fragments into different bands along a gel. Each band contains fragments the same size. The technique allows scientists to locate particular genes and to work out their structure. The blue stripes on this gel are where the samples are loaded.
