Early detection of cancer: a red pen marks a band on a DNA sequencing autoradiogram confirming a bladder cancer. Scientists in the Nuffield Department of Pathology at John Radcliffe Hospital,Oxford, have developed a method for the early detection of cancer before it spreads (metastasizes) around the body. They examined the gene responsible for a glycoprotein,CD44,which determines the mobility of lymphocytes, comparing its activity in cancerous & normal tissue. Results revealed a significant variation in the quantity & type of CD44 products that allowed them to differentiate between normal tissue, benign tumours & cancers. mRNA from a section of the gene was amplified using PCR & CD44 products analysed by gel electrophoresis & blot hybridisation | |
