Gene therapy for malignant melanoma. Light micrograph (LM) of cancerous tissue (at left),taken from a 53 year old woman with malignant (cancerous) melanoma (skin cancer). The biopsy of another tumour at right has been taken from the same patient following gene therapy,involving treatment with tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). TILs are cells collected from the site of a tumour,which are transduced with the gene for tumour necrosis factor (TNF). When these cells are injected back into the tumour bearing host,they will specifically kill the tumour from which they originated. The post treatment biopsy at right shows a substantial improvement with an absence of live melanoma cells
