Ovarian cancer. Light micrograph of a section through a granulosa cell tumour (GCT). This rare type of ovarian tumour is formed from the stroma, the connective tissue that makes up most of the ovary. Granulosa cell tumours often produce large amounts of the female hormone oestrogen. This can cause early onset of signs of puberty in affected children. In adults it may disrupt the menstrual cycle or cause bleeding after the menopause. The hormonal effects mean that the condition is often diagnosed early. Because the tumour is not usually invasive,it is normally removed before it spreads, although it may recur later. Only 20% of cases are fatal | |
