Bone cancer. Light micrograph of a section through bone revealing a giant cell osteosarcoma. This tumour has arisen as a rare complication of Paget's disease,a condition where there is excessive breakdown and formation of bone. Most cases of osteosarcoma occur in the young and are not due to Paget's disease, which affects older people. Osteosarcoma is among the most malignant of cancers. It usually starts in a long bone, often near the knee. It can spread rapidly, usually to the lungs. To prevent spread, removal of part of the affected bone or even amputation of the limb may be required. Magnification unknown | |
