Leukaemia. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a lymphocytic leukaemia cell (upper centre),a cause of blood cancer. The cancerous cell is on a bone marrow fibroblast cell. Lymphocytic leukaemia is caused by a genetic mutation in a lymphocyte,a white blood cell which forms part of the immune system, whilst it is in blood-forming bone marrow. This cell and its descendents multiply rapidly, reducing the marrow's ability to produce normal blood cells. There are two forms of this leukaemia: acute,in which immature cells are produced, and chronic,in which mature-looking cells are produced. Magnification: x3,600 at 6x7cm size.
