| Cancer of the large intestine. Light micrograph of an adenocarcinoma tumour from a patient with can- cer of the colon (large intestine) - one of the most common forms of cancer. Adenocarcinomas arise from glandular epithelial cells,such as mucus- secreting cells in the gut. The cancer cells here appear dark brown,stained by cytokeratin anti- body. The surrounding unstained material is connective tissue and blood vessels,the nuclei of which appear blue. Cytokeratin is a structural protein produced by epithelial cells. Cytokeratin antibody binds specifically to the protein,and is used to confirm the epithelial origin of unidenti- fied tumours. Magnification x125 at 35mm size | |
