Cancer cells in ascitic fluid. Light micrograph of cancerous (malignant) glandular cells in human ascitic fluid. Here, dark clusters of cancer cells are seen with large nuclei which stain purple; many of the cells contain transparent vacuoles (as at lower centre). Cancer cells can divide and grow rapidly. Found in ascitic fluid (body cavity fluid),these cells may have originated from a diseased organ such as the liver or an ovary. Other diagnostic procedures would locate the precise site of the cancer. Stained with Papanicolaou. Magnification: x40 at 35mm size | |
