Skin cancer. Immunofluorescent Light Micrograph of squamous carcinoma cells, cultured from a tumour. This highly malignant cancer arises in epithelium: typically of the skin. The cell nuclei (blue) are large; cytoplasm stains orange for keratin,a fibrous skin protein that appears to radiate from the nuclei. Squamous cell carcinoma can be caused by high exposure to sunlight. It is common in pale-skinned fair-haired people over age 60. Immunofluorescence is a technique which uses anti- bodies to attach fluorescent dyes to specific tissues and to molecules within the cell. Magnification: x125 at 35mm; x225 at 6x4.5cm size | |
