Skin cancer. Immunofluorescent Light Micrograph of squamous carcinoma cells, cultured from a human tumour. This highly malignant cancer arises in epithelium: typically of the skin. Nuclei (blue) of these cancer cells are large; cytoplasm stains red; the cell membrane is green with actin stress fibres binding these cells together. Squamous cell carcinoma can be caused by high exposure to sunlight. It is common in pale-skinned fair-haired people over age 60. Immunofluorescence is a technique which uses antibodies to attach fluorescent dyes to specific tissues and molecules within the cell. Magnification: x125 at 35mm size | |
