False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) showing nuclear deformation in human cancer cells. The picture shows the elongated nuclei of two cancer cells (green, red flecks),each with a similar, uneven border along the nuclear membrane. In most normal cells, the nucleus has an even, rounded or oval profile. The nuclei of cancer cells display varying degrees of distortion or apparent fragmentation (the nucleus may appear to have split in half). These changes may represent progressive nuclear destruction,or they may be an attempt by the cell to increase nuclear surface area & enhance the contact between nucleus & cytoplasm.
